Morocco is the African country closest to Europe. It lies in the north-west of the African continent, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Algeria to the east and Mauritania to the south. In the south, Morocco has occupied Western Sahara, controlling this area which it considers one of its provinces, although the Sahrawis consider themselves an independent country with their own government.
The geographical centre of the country is crossed by the Atlas mountains, which stretch to the fertile plantations and beaches of the Atlantic coast. The central range extends to the south of the country, rising to 4,000 metres, and is covered with pines, oaks and cedars, as well as pastures and small lakes. The Rif mountains line the north coast.
Morocco has developed a mosaic of artistic traditions, all linked by music: from the classical style that developed in Muslim Spain and the Berber storytelling traditions to the contemporary fusion of African and French styles. Although more associated with Algeria, raï is the strongest musical style in Morocco’s cities.
