Morocco is the African country closest to Europe. It lies in the north-west of the African continent, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Algeria to the east and Mauritania to the south. In the south, Morocco has occupied Western Sahara, controlling this area which it considers one of its provinces, although the Sahrawis consider themselves an independent country with their own government.
Climate
Inland Morocco has extreme temperatures: very cold in winter and extremely hot in summer.
In Marrakech the average summer temperature is about 38 °C; in spring it is about 21 °C.
In mountain areas such as the Atlas, temperatures can drop below zero, which is why the mountains are snow-capped for much of the year.
